A rained out day demands some chai, bhajiya and of course great tunes and if Bollywood has anything, it has the most sublime, slow songs perfect for a rainy day. Check out this list of soothing songs that aren’t necessarily about the rains but make for great listening when you’re indoors and enjoying the rains. Whether it is chai, wine, hot chocolate or good ol’ coffee these songs make for an idyllic backdrop to an evening well spent.

In Dino – Life in a Metro

Wet and inconvenient is how most of us would describe the rains in Mumbai. But if you’re working from home or have taken the day off, you can’t go wrong with cranking this up. Set in Mumbai during the monsoons, this movie is one of the most wonderful reflections of the complexity of relationships.

Tum Se Hi – Jab We Met

Geet and her free spirit. We all fell in love with her just a little bit. It didn’t hurt that the music was top notch. A little bit of this on a rainy day can drive away those blues

Saawan barse, tarse dil – Dahek

This little known film with Akshaye Khanna and Sonali Bendre didn’t do very well at the box office but this song will steal your heart.

Taal se taal mila – Taal

Aishwarya Rai’s fresh faced beauty was something to behold in this movie. The cinematography, lyrics and music just added to the whole package.

Aaogey Jab – Jab We Met

This movie has our heart. Aditya watching Geet who’s become a shell of her former self is heartbreaking.  The lyrics are inspirational and the bansuri is just sublime.

Nahi Saamne – Taal

This song was shot during the rains in Mumbai on Marine Drive, Gateway of India and believe it or not Powai – when it was open and deserted. Gorgeous! Hariharan’s voice, the cinematography and the music will transport you.

Tum Hi Ho – Aashiqui 2

Arijit Singh just killed it with this song. The music, the lyrics, the rendition – PERFECTION!

Woh Lamhein – Zeher

This movie was a remake of Denzel Washington and Eva Mendes’ Out of Time. It was even set and shot in Goa to mimic the Florida locale of the original. While the movie was okayish, this song was the bomb. Even the remix was pretty awesome and was a staple in parties at the time.

Kaale Kaale Baadal – Anjaane

This long forgotten film with Raveena Tandon and Vivek Mushran had the sweetest song. Simple lyrics, melodious music and top notch rendition. If you haven’t heard it yet, go listen!

Mitwa – Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna

This isn’t typically a rain song but fits perfectly with a rainy day indoors. The Indian instruments, Shankar Mahadevan and lyrical poetry. You’re going to hit replay on this one.

Gerua – Dilwale

Everything about this just works. The melody, the voices, the music make a lovely medley that you just won’t want to stop listening to.

Yeh Honsla – Dor

A heartbreaking movie on loving and losing and forgiveness and freedom. This must go on your must-watch list if you haven’t already seen it. This song will give you goosebumps – every time.

Iktara – Wake up Sid

The concept of Wake Up Sid resonated with people and the fresh take on privilege and finding yourself, your passion and having a goal was well received. Konkana Sharma (always a delight) to watch and Ranbir Kapoor brought their A game. Quite a gem of a film and this song is quite uplifting.

Mast Magan – 2 States

Doleful, soulful and superbly produced, this song will make your heart sing along till you learn the lyrics.

Agar Tum Saath Ho – Tamasha

The movie received mixed responses from the audience but the song and the accompanying video are raw emotion. It’ll tug at your heart strings, flick your wounds and make you want to listen to it all over again, just so you can suffer some more. Be ready for water works with this one.

Hosh Waalon Ko Khabar Kya

Sarfarosh was one of Aamir Khan’s best work and this song will simply transport you to your first love. Jagjit Singh ever the icon gave life to this song and the lyrics will make you want to fall in love.
