Chai is a love language – at least in India. Chai with friends at a tapri, with work colleagues in the office canteen, with bae in bed, with your mum (spilling tea of course IYKYK), with dad bas yun hi, with siblings after arguing over who’s going to make said chai and of course sipping it early in the morning enjoying some alone time.

Simple, sweet kadak chai is always welcome, but sometimes sweet isn’t an option – health issues and lifestyle choices are two of the most common and important reasons people choose not to have sugar in their tea. But honestly, pheeki chai bhi koi chai hai?

The cheapest and best substitute to sugar is jaggery. Found in every Indian home, jaggery is a good substitute for sugar. Sure, it does take getting used to, but beats having that morning cuppa without sugar or with a synthetic sweetener.

Apart from being inexpensive, jaggery is also a healthier option considering its nutritional benefits when compared to plain white sugar.

Check out why you should probably switch to jaggery even if you don’t HAVE to.

1. Rich in Nutrients
Unlike refined sugars that are stripped of their vitamins and minerals during processing, jaggery retains a significant amount of nutrients and is a good source of iron, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins.

2. Natural Antioxidant Properties
The presence of phytochemicals and other compounds gives jaggery its natural antioxidant properties that help neutralise harmful free radicals in the body, protecting cells from oxidative stress.

3. Regulates Blood Sugar Levels
Jaggery has a lower glycemic index compared to refined sugar and so the gradual release of sugar into the bloodstream prevents rapid spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels. This makes jaggery a suitable sweetener for those with diabetes – of course when consumed in moderation. The slow release of sugar provides a more sustained energy release without causing abrupt fluctuations in blood glucose levels.

4. Aids in Digestion
Jaggery stimulates the digestive enzymes in the body, facilitating the breakdown of food and promoting better digestion. Switch up your usual after-meal dessert to a small piece of jaggery to help alleviate indigestion, bloating, and constipation.

5. No Chemical Additives
Unlike some refined sugars that may contain chemical additives, jaggery is often free of such additives, making it a more natural option.

6. Environmental Impact
Jaggery production generally involves fewer chemicals and processing steps compared to the production of refined sugar, making it potentially more environmentally friendly.

7. Distinct Flavour Profile
Jaggery has a unique flavour profile, imparting a rich, caramel-like taste to tea. It is an acquired taste, but one that doesn’t take too long getting used to.

8. Balances Electrolytes
Jaggery contains essential minerals like potassium, which plays a vital role in maintaining electrolyte balance in the body. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who engage in strenuous physical activities, as it helps prevent dehydration and muscle cramps. Including jaggery in your diet can contribute to overall electrolyte stability, ensuring optimal bodily functions.

Toh gud-wali chai ho jaaye?
